News Flash • Resiliency, community college and marketing on



May 20, 2024 — The Hampton City Council will hear updates on Virginia Peninsula Community College, the city’s Natural Infrastructure Resilience Plan, and branding for the Hampton Coliseum area at its Wednesday afternoon work session.

The Council also will conduct a 6 p.m. spotlight ceremony recognizing this year’s valedictorians and salutatorians from Bethel, Hampton, Kecoughtan and Phoebus high schools.

The 1 p.m. work session in chambers will include:

  • The Virginia Peninsula Community College presentation will go into detail about enrollment, VPCC’s economic impact on the region and state, and plans to expand its resources and its workforce programming.
  • A presentation on plans to use grant funding to increase advertising and marketing related to the Hampton Coliseum and the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Once a brand is developed, the marketing will focus on attracting business-class hotel rooms, restaurants and other amenities in the vicinity. 
  • A presentation of the city’s Natural Infrastructure Resiliency Plan to deal with the impacts of climate change and sea level rise. Resilient Hampton will host an open house meeting on Thursday at the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center at which residents can learn about the plan and offer input.

At the 6:30 p.m. legislative session, the Council will hear consent items related to three residences where property owners plan to raise a 6-foot fence near a city drainage and utility easement. There will also be a resolution regarding Hampton leaving the Hampton Roads Regional Jail Authority, which has shut down The city plans to join the Western Tidewater Regional Jail Authority, which runs the Western Tidewater Jail in Suffolk.

The work and legislative sessions, as well as the spotlight ceremony, are open to the public on the eighth floor of City Hall, 22 Lincoln St. Click here for information on how to attend.
